Festival Review: Big Day Out - Arena Joondalup, Perth (02.02.14)

Big Day Out and Perth have had a pretty strained relationship in recent years, with venue changes, reduced line-ups and poor ticket sales. This year was no different, with Blur dropping out, and continued tensions between organisers and local councils prompting a last minute change in venues and the announcement by AJ Maddah that it would be the last time the event would come to Perth.

The Hives

With so many bands they wouldn't fit in one gallery, here is Part Two of the Adelaide Big Day Out. Featuring main stage acts such as Tame Impala and The Hives plus many more.

Festival Review: Big Day Out - Bonython Park, Adelaide (31.01.14)

You know you're in for a hard time when you check the weather as you leave your house at 10am and it's already heading towards the 30 degree mark. No city does a summer heatwave quite like Adelaide, but if 2014 was going to be the last year the Big Day Out stopped by this area of the country, I didn't want to reflect on it sitting at home.

Live Review: Toro y Moi + Portugal. The Man - The Hi-Fi, Sydney (29.01.14)

Sideshows to major festivals are always a welcome relief for those who can’t bear a full day in sweltering heat, so the announcement of Toro y Moi coupled with Portugal. The Man surely garnered anticipation, if only due to the slightly unconventional stylistic combination.

The Big Day Out sideshows continued last night in Sydney at The Hi-Fi with the anticipated double bill of Toro y Moi with Portugal. The Man. Mikki Gomez was there and brings us these photos from the epic night:

Live Review: Toro y Moi + Portugal. The Man - The Hi-Fi Bar, Melbourne (21.01.14)

A lot can be said about the quality of a live show before it even begins. A packed out venue, as was the Hi-Fi Bar for Toro y Moi’s Big Day Out sideshow, is typically indicative of a decent gig. But when members of Arcade Fire and Tame Impala are amongst the punters having a casual round of pre show drinks at the bar, you are probably right to suggest the show will be nothing short of brilliant. Fortunately, Toro y Moi’s live set exceeded all expectations.

the AU interview: Zach Carothers of Portugal. The Man (USA) talks Big Day Out

Portugal. The Man are heading to Australia in January to play the 2014 Big Day Out Festival and several sideshows following the release of their seventh studio album, Evil Friends earlier this year. Clare Armstrong spoke with bassist Zach Carothers about Australia, recording the new album with Brian Burton aka Danger Mouse and much more.
