It’s another Saturday night at the East Brunswick Club, and the band room is packed to capacity with a bevy of music fans keen to hear the new songs the Hungry Kids of Hungary have been locked away in the studio recording.

Support act Ernest Ellis may not be a name you have heard, but it’s one you should become very familiar with. The troubadour from Sydney is a dreamboat with his curly hair and deep, sexy voice. His live show was incredible with a massive, sweeping echoing sound and some very pretty arrangements. He takes his inspiration from Jack Kerouac, PJ Harvey, Nick Cave and Beck. With influences like that, it’ll be interesting to see what his forthcoming album sounds like.

The Hungry Kids of Hungary played unbridled indie pop that had the crowd up and dancing to their sweet, harmonious tunes. Front men Dean McGrath and Kane Mazlin are born entertainers, dancing all over the stage and interacting with the crowd in between songs. They seem to thrive in the limelight and were just as excited to be performing as the people in the crowd were to be seeing them play. They showcased an even mix of older material and new songs from their forthcoming record “HKH”, which were a delight to see. However, they did almost take a few people’s heads off by throwing free HKH Frisbees into the audience. Highlights of the set included ripper versions of “Let You Down” and “Scattered Diamonds” and some great new songs: “Coming Around” and “Eat Your Heart Out”. The boys encored with a fun cover of “Paper Planes “by M.I.A, which was the perfect end to a very enjoyable night. See you next time you’re in Melbourne HKH. Bring more balloons – they’re less dangerous than your Frisbees.
