SXSW Final Night Highlights: DZ Deathrays, Think No Think and Gary Numan (15.03.14)

By the time I finally got to check out DZ Deathrays at SXSW, they had already played ten shows. This one - just after midnight at Bar 96 - was their eleventh and last. So it was perhaps appropriate that things should go a bit wrong, as someone "pulled the power" before the hit the stage. But they eventually rocked on and got in four tracks.

SXSW Live Review: Sound Gallery ft. DD Dumbo + Owl Eyes + Bellusira + The Kin and more... - BD Reilly's (SXSW 2014)

This year, the Sound Gallery event at B.D. Reilly's expanded to two days, showcasing a pile of fantastic Australian bands - the ones that couldn't make the Aussie BBQ, essentially! There were some 50 Australian bands there this year after all... In an article put together by Larry Heath and Sosefina Fuamoli, here are some of the highlights from those two events:

DZ Deathrays, Ernest Ellis, Awesome Tapes From Africa and more round out the Secret Garden Festival's lineup!

The sold-out Secret Garden Festival has dropped a second artist announcement that is sure to make people either ecstatic that they snagged tickets or devastated they missed out, one of the two. There's just under a fortnight to go until these bands come together for one hell of a party and considering the initial lineup was already ridiculously good, it's no surprise that the event organisers have gone and upped the ante with this second lot as well.

The Big Day Out rolled in to Adelaide on its traditional last Friday in January on another scorching 40 degree day. With the decision to move away from the Royal Adelaide Showgrounds, many people were longing for the shade of the grandstand, but the new location proved easy to move around and a good size for the crowd on the day. The bands put on some fantastics sets, despite the heat and the crowd did a great job taking care of themselves and those around them, making it another fantastic Big Day Out in Adelaide. Hopefully there will be many more!

Festival Review: Big Day Out - Bonython Park, Adelaide (31.01.14)

You know you're in for a hard time when you check the weather as you leave your house at 10am and it's already heading towards the 30 degree mark. No city does a summer heatwave quite like Adelaide, but if 2014 was going to be the last year the Big Day Out stopped by this area of the country, I didn't want to reflect on it sitting at home.

Festival Review: Big Day Out - Sydney Showground (26.01.14)

Hiccups leading up to something as grand as Big Day Out is nothing surprising in this market nowadays; our flagship music festival has suffered, as of late, from a growing counter-culture that loves nothing more than to criticise in an area they feel they have enough knowledge to do so; among other things of course. Despite that, it still remains that the Big Day Out – super-charged by the relatively recent restructuring of its management – excels at balancing commercial appeal with credibility, giving as much diversity as is needed to ensure people of all different tastes are given all the necessary ingredients to make for a great day out.

More Australian artists added to the SXSW 2014 lineup!

SXSW is right around the corner and still, the exciting announcements continue to roll out. If you missed it yesterday, a third round of musicians were announced to be headed to Austin for a week of showcase performances, seminars and general music good times, including a bunch of Aussies.

the AU interview: Simon Ridley of DZ Deathrays (Brisbane) talks Big Day Out and their next album!

The surprising single "Northern Lights" by DZ Deathrays showed that the band are more versatile than they may have once been given credit for. As drummer Simon Ridley from the duo explains, in our interview to anticipate their performances at Big Day Out around the country next month, that was exactly what they set out to do... though that doesn't exactly mean we should expect more of the same from their anticipated follow up to Bloodstreams. Read on!

Andrew Wade brings us this gallery featuring the explosive METZ supported by hometown heroes DZ Deathrays and The Mercy Beat at The Rev in Brisbane. Enjoy, at your own risk:

Single Stream: DZ Deathrays "Northern Lights" (2013)

We're excited to present "Northern Lights", the first single from DZ Deathrays forthcoming sophomore LP, which we are expecting to be released in the first half of 2014. The track was produced and mixed by Andy Savours, and it's a bit of a change from what we're used to from the Brisbane duo. We don't think this is necessarily what the whole album is going to sound like, but it's great to see Simon and Shane go out of their comfort zone and produce some really interesting music...
