BIGSOUND Live: Highlights of Night One - Part Three (09.09.15)

Every year as September rolls around, Brisbane opens up it’s arms and takes Australia’s youngest up and coming musical talents into a warm, boozy embrace. An all you can eat musical buffet of 150 bands across 15 stages was presented for punters to feast on as the sun went down over the Fortitude Valley skyline.

Album Review: Ben Salter - Live at the Northcote Social Club (2015 LP)

It’s time for a stopover at the glamour of the Northcote Social Club with the newest offering from Ben Salter. The folk singer has released a short eight tracks from this newest tour from the tiny Melbourne haunt. The vocalist/guitarist for Giants of Science has been at it for a while now, swapping out the electric guitar for the battered old acoustic and shelving the ‘nerdcore’ persona for a much more sincere voice. But how much does this voice suit him?

Gang of Youths, Holy Holy, Timberwolf & more featured on first official BIGSOUND artist announcement!

BIGSOUND has named the first 50 artists for the 2015 live program and for another year, Brisbane looks to become a buzzing hive of excellent live music in September! BIGSOUND Live sees 14 music venues through the Valley taken over by some impressive line ups of bands from around Australia and abroad over two nights for what has become Australia's biggest gathering of industry and music fans. Last year's BIGSOUND program was hectic, showcasing some diverse and brilliant talent - both emerging and established - and this year is going to be no different.

Album Review: Ben Salter - The Stars My Destination (2015 LP)

Ben Salter is a singer/songwriter completely comfortable in his own skin. His second solo album The Stars My Destination projects a big band sound upon what are essentially beautifully written pop songs. Memorable vocal melodies and uplifting open chord progressions are on show throughout this album, but I’d be selling the track list short to suggest Salter is just your average Australiana storyteller with an acoustic guitar on hand; there are a multitude of instrumental layers on this album, all of which emanate a gripping emotional hold.

'A Festival Called Panama' returns for another year in 2015, with Sharon Van Etten, Ben Salter and more to feature!

Tasmania's A Festival Called Panama will be returning in March 2015 after a successful run earlier this year! Taking place in the gorgeous Panama Forest, the festival brought together a stunning landscape, a creative program and a wonderfully receptive audience. It's only logical that this same group of festival organisers would want to run it again! As it was in 2014, tickets for A Festival Called Panama will be quite limited, with only 1000 punters to pass through the gates.

Album Review: Ben Salter - European Vacation (2013 EP)

Australia’s very own wandering troubadour, Ben Salter, presents an EP that is all about the journey rather than the destination. The aptly named EP, European Vacation is a collection of songs that were created during Salter’s 5 month travels across Europe, and include collaborations with various artists he met along the way.

Larry Heath talks to Brisbane's Ben Salter about writing new music and EP in the UK and Europe, playing Dark Mofo in Tasmania, his European Vacation tour and more...

Live Review: Charles Jenkins and the Zhivagos + Suzannah Espie + Ben Salter - The Spotted Mallard (23.02.13)

Ben Salter is no stranger to the Australian music scene. In fact, he has been heavily involved with a number of bands over the years. I am not willing to list all the bands here, mostly because I think as a solo artist he is quite underrated. Like a great deal of other Australian artists, it’s about time he was recognised.
