Margin Call – SBS 2 – 8:30pm AEST

This smart and tense drama is set in the early days of the 2008 financial crisis. Written and directed by J.C. Chandor, Margin Call features an all-star cast including Kevin Spacey, Jeremy Irons, Simon Baker, Demi Moore and Stanley Tucci. The performances are top-notch and the script was nominated for an Oscar; it is well worth a watch for an insider view of the economic collapse.

The Disappearance of Alice Creed – SBS 2 – 10:25pm AEST

The Disappearance of Alice Creed is an excellent thriller, taking a simple kidnapping story and mining it for its unnerving aspects. Alice Creed (Gemma Arterton) is a millionaire’s daughter who is kidnapped by Vic (Eddie Marson) and his accomplice Danny (Martin Compston). What follows is a tense power play as the victim is determined not to go down without a fight.

Save the Last Dance – Ch.11 – 9:30pm AEST

Julia Stiles stars as Sara, a ballerina who must rediscover her passion to dance after the tragic death of her mother. Forced to move to Chicago to live with her father in a predominantly black neighbourhood, Save the Last Dance explores the tensions around her and melds together their dance styles. Stiles shines as usual, imbuing her role with her intelligence and humour.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. – Ch. 7 – 10:00pm AEST

The U.S. series created by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon and Maruissa Tancharoen is based on the Marvel Comics organisation S.H.I.E.L.D. Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) and his team must face the consequences of war with Hydra.

Comedy Up Late – ABC – 10:01pm AEST

Comedy Up Late features the best comedians from the 2015 Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s late night venue The Festival Club. Tom Ballard presents the local and international talent taking the stage.
