It’s that time of the year again when Melbournians revel in the warmth of late sunsets, eagerly awaiting the advent of dusk and all the excitement that catching a movie in the glorious open-air can bring. This summer, there’s no better place to see the latest release films than at Lido Cinemas in Hawthorn, where the new stunning rooftop cinema, aptly titled Lido on the Roof, launched on Tuesday with a 007-inspired theme.
The event captured the imagination of guests, with each indulging in revealing their mysterious spy within. Smooth-spoken gentlemen in suave suits and alluring dark-eyed beauties served only to heighten the level of intrigue as they delighted in a mixture of canapés, martinis (shaken, not stirred) and the enticing casino game of roulette.
Although the majority of the evening’s energy was concentrated indoors due to the threat of rain, the weather cleared to reveal an impressive rooftop featuring snug beanbags, comfortable deck chairs and a bar – all with expansive views of Hawthorn and the city skyline beyond. Guests at the media launch were treated to a sneak preview of Lido on the Roof’s summer calendar, including films such as James Bond’s Spectre, biographical drama The Danish Girl, as well as the long-awaited first instalment in the Star Wars trilogy, The Force Awakens.
We were well-fed during the launch but if at anytime you’re feeling a little peckish during a film, there is an assortment of snacks including vegetarian bao, wasabi peas and even miso soup to keep your stomach from growling too loudly. As with any cinema, popcorn and choc-tops remain as much-loved staples but at Lido, you may pair them with everything from beer and cider to sparkling wine, martinis, strawberry daiquiris, iced lattes and even your own fresh drinking coconut.
Lido on the Roof will run until April 2016 and further programming will be announced shortly. In the meantime, here is a rundown of what you may expect to see coming up in the next few weeks as we make our way into summer!
