TV Review: Broad City Season 3 Episode 1, “In Heat” (USA 201)

Abbi and Ilana are back in the newest season of sometimes surreal, always on point TV series Broad City. And it’s just been confirmed by Comedy Central they’re green lighted for Season 4 and 5 as well. (Yass Gaga!) If the sneak peak of the first episode is anything to go by fans are in for more adventures into the terrifyingly mundane. The new season is scheduled for release February 17th.

This first episode is all about subtleties and a promise of more quirks. It seems in this episode they’ve pulled back from the element of absurdity. Whether that’s a new development for this series we won’t know until we get stuck into the rest of the season. Abbi is still an aspiring artist, but there’s no mention of Soulstice yet. A brief montage in the opening scenes confirms both girls are still avid stoners and essentially just typical 20-something girls figuring it out – sighing in relief at negative pregnancy tests, straightening their hair and sometimes just singing for the hell of it. Abbi and Ilana do all the weird shit on screen that you do off-screen alone.

Abbi’s old college roommate is achieving everything Abbi hasn’t, and she needs the perfect outfit to disprove any of that in the rival’s eyes. A brief trip into a Pop Up Warehouse Sale to find the perfect top is disturbingly accurate as it is funny.

But don’t fret, cast members aren’t being bumped for new characters. Hannibal Buress, Arturo Castro, Paul W. Downs, John Gemberling and Chris Gethard are all returning. As well as a line-up of some fantastic celebrity guest stars.

It seems like the girls are making progress and changes too, in a slow sort of life-like way. Almost a direct reference from the last episode in which Abbi had some art featured in a shop and Ilana thought she’d lost her house key, in this episode Lincoln chides her again for forgetting her key. Ilana explains I always chant the reminder but I dropped it in a drain this time. Abbi seems to be upping her wardrobe game as well, and even Lincoln is trying new things and making fantastic Sex and the City references. Rumour is there will be new job opportunities for someone too.

But change isn’t something to fear. There will still be the same loveable quirks of the pair, as well as the rest of the cast including Bevers and Jaime Castro. A green light for seasons to come is a green light for some fantastic, smart and always unsuspecting comedy from Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer.

SCORE: Four out of five stars

Broad City returns to Foxtel’s The Comedy Channel on February 22 at 9:30PM AEST.
