The first trailer for Kong: Skull Island appears at San Diego Comic-Con

San Diego Comic-Con has been rolling out the announcements all weekend, but few feel quite as anticipated as this one: it’s the first trailer for Kong: Skull Island, the new film in Legendary’s Godzilla / King Kong cross-over franchise, which stars Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L Jackson, John Goodman, John C Reilly and recent Academy Award winner Brie Larson (Room).

The film “re-imagines the origin of the mythic Kong in a compelling, original adventure from director Jordan Vogt-Roberts. In the film, a diverse team of explorers is brought together to venture deep into an uncharted island in the Pacific—as beautiful as it is treacherous—unaware that they’re crossing into the domain of the mythic Kong.”

Though it may not feel like that long since Peter Jackson took us to the King Kong universe, this film fits into the puzzle of a larger film strategy for Warner Brothers. Rather than re-entering Jackson’s universe from 2005, the film takes us into the same universe as Gareth Edwards critically acclaimed Godzilla (2014), and precedes the release of Godzilla 2 in 2019 and then Godzilla vs Kong in 2020.
