The first look at Down Under, the sure-to-be controversial Australian black comedy telling the story of the aftermath of the Cronulla riots has arrived. The image, and film, features both perspectives of the fight and, through humour, director Abe Forsythe deliberately confronts racism head on.
“There is nothing more satisfying than getting people to laugh at something they feel like they shouldn’t be laughing at. Comedy is the best way to say something meaningful,” he says.
The images arrive alongside the 10th anniversary of the racially fuelled riots. According to producers, Down Under depicts racism as a by-product of characters that are long for a sense of belonging and control. The film aims to present a poignant story through the comedic lens following some of the sincere, albeit misguided, groups and their kebab-cravings.
