Square Enix announces new Final Fantasy XIV expansion, StormBlood, and reveals new trailer

Square Enix has announced a new expansion, StormBlood, for the popular online RPG Final Fantasy XIV. The announcement was made during the sold-out player’s event, Las Vegas Fan Festival, where Director and Producer Naoki Yoshida took the stage to present a new trailer and reveal exciting details about the expansion, which is expected to be released in ‘early summer 2017.’

Yoshida’s keynote opened with a brand new trailer featuring a mysterious new woman in red, training with The Warrior of Light. The trailer sees the pair sparring atop a grassy stone mountain set in amongst a large desert backdrop, revealed by Yoshida as one of the new hubs players will visit on their journey to Ala Mhigo.

Alongside the day’s big news, Yoshida made a huge announcement that the player’s item inventory will be getting an extreme expansion in Stormblood, which will be rolled out over time to avoid server strain.

Stormblood will feature vast new areas that will be equal in size and number to its predecessor Heavensward, and promises a stand-alone game’s worth of content. The expansion will include new boss fights, brand new challenging dungeons and high-end raids. While Yoshida kept quiet about the new jobs being introduced into the game, he revealed that he took inspiration from comic book heroes such as Batman.

While fans were treated to a ton of new information at the Las Vegas Fan Fest, Square Enix say’s that there is still more to come. Players can expect to hear more about the game when information is revealed at the Tokyo Fan Festival in December and the Frankfurt Europe Fan Festival in February.
