Paramount and Bad Robot to adapt the hit Japanese anime Your Name

Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot have announced that they have won the rights to adapt the popular Japanese animated film Your Name for the silver screen. The two companies will work with Toho Co., Ltd, the producers of the original animated film. Toho will then handle the release of the film within Japan.

J.J. Abrams and Lindsey Weber will produce on behalf of Bad Robot, with Genki Kawamura, the producer of the original. Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Eric Heisserer (Arrival) will write the screenplay.

Your Name is an original story created, written and directed by Makoto Shinkai, and tells the story of a teenage boy and girl from different backgrounds who discover they have the ability to swap bodies. They must then cross space and time in order to meet each other and stop an impending disaster.

The original film was produced by Genki Kawamura with Minami Ichikawa, Keiji Ota, with both Yoshihiro Furusawa for Toho Co., Ltd., and  Noritaka Kawaguchi for CoMix Wave Films serving as executive producers.

Your Name has the honour of the highest grossing anime film at the worldwide box office, earning US$355 million. In Japan, it has earned ¥25.0 billion (US$303M), having held top spot at the box office for a non-consecutive yet record-breaking 12 weeks.

As it is still early in proceedings, no word has yet been revealed as to when production will begin or who will star. Here’s hoping Paramount learned a few things from their recent critically panned adaptation, Ghost in the Shell.
