John Boyega to star in Pacific Rim sequel film

Following the success of his role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, it has been announced that John Boyega will be starring in the upcoming Pacific Rim sequel.

Reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Boyega will be undertaking the lead role as the son of Idris Elba’s character from the original film. The plot of the sequel has been kept under wraps, but with Boyega starring in the film, it means that the sequel will be following the events of the first instalment.

The film will be directed by Steven S. DeKnight, based on the world created by created by Guillermo del Toro and Travis Beacham. Taking care of the production will be Thomas Tull, Mary Parent, Jon Jashni and del Toro, along with Boyega and Femi Oguns under their Upper Room Productions. Cale Boyter will serve as the executive producer role. Universal Pictures will be oversee worldwide distribution of the film, with the exception of China.

“It is undeniable that with all his talent and natural charm, John stands out amongst today’s generation of young leading men,” said Legendary vice chairman of worldwide production Mary Parent.

The first instalment of Pacific Rim was released in cinemas back in July 2013, starring Elba and Charlie Hunnam. The film managed to make US$411 million worldwide.

“I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox,” said del Toro. “The Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. ‘The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job.”
