First Impressions: Preacher Season Two looks set to be twisted, hilarious and action packed

Last year, we named Preacher one of our favourite shows for 2016, the show, an adaptation of the Preacher comics written by Garth Ennis and the late Steve Dillon whilst the tv version has been adapted by Sam Catlin, Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen. The show sees a small town preacher with a criminal past becomes possessed by an entity that gives him the power to command people to do as he says. The first season serves as somewhat of a prequel and our introduction to the main characters and borrowing elements from multiple comic storylines. Season Two looks to expand further on the original story.

At the end of Season One, Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper), Tulip O’Hare (Ruth Negga) and Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) had left Annville Texas to go looking for God. Funnily enough blissfully unaware that Annville had been literally blown off the map thanks to an enormous methane explosion at the Quincannon meat plant. However striding out of the dust from the blast came a mysterious character we had only seen momentarily during vignettes in that first season.

From our look at the first episode our trio of misfits are trekking across Texas, on their mission to find God. All whilst trying to avoid awkward love triangle tension. However Jesse needs to connect with another preacher who happened to be friends with his father to get more information. Along the way of course they get into a little trouble with some police only to narrowly escape with their lives after being assailed by a sniper with superpowered bullets. We are soon after introduced to The Saint of Killers (Graham McTavish), a bounty hunter murderous cowboy from Hell trying to track down Jesse and Genesis, the entity within him giving him his ability to make people do exactly what he says.

Their journey takes them from Texas to New Orleans where they encounter Herr Starr (Pip Torrens) and Lara Featherstone (Julie Ann Emery) members of The Grail, a powerful and secret organisation that once they discover Jesse’s power, are intent on using it for their own purposes. Along the way we’ll also find out what’s happened to Eugene ‘Assface’ Root (Ian Colletti) after being accidentally sent to Hell by Jesse.

Even in this episode we see why the series was such a standout, combining irreverent black humour with morally questionable but relatable characters set against the backdrop of America’s gun-nuts, religious zealots and all those in between whilst refusing to shy away from its gory and brutal origins. This latest season is sure to be just as twisted and messed up and hilarious and action packed as the first.

Preacher Season 2 will air on STAN commencing today, Monday 26th and Episode 2 available tomorrow Tuesday 27th June 2017, then week to week after.
