Film Review: Zootopia (PG) (USA, 2016)

Disney hits the mark again with Zootopia (directed by Byron Howard & Rich Moore).  Surprisingly different from the other Disney films that leave you crying and happy at the same time, Zootopia is mostly a feel good film.

It centers on Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) who sticks to her dream of becoming a police officer despite others telling her that it’s fruitless because of her rabbit size. She makes it to the big city of Zootopia where predator and prey are civilised residents, living together in harmony.

Unfortunately, Judy’s size is still an issue and she is quickly assigned to parking tickets. Quickly growing bored of this, she jumps on the chance to become a real police officer by offering to investigate a group of missing animals. With the help of con artist Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman), a fox, the investigation leads to a series of trouble and twists that rips Zootopia apart.

The characters are well developed and yes, there were moments where the tears came. The film was able to convey its themes of social acceptance, don’t-quit and believing-in-yourself while staying comedic and family friendly at the same time.

The plot is solid and not as simple as I thought. Midway through the film, it was unclear where the story was going to go, heightening the sense of investigation and mystery. Leaving you on the edge of your seat, making the clever unexpected plot twists effective.

You don’t need to be a kid to enjoy Zootopia.
