Box Office Report: Liam Neeson flies Non-Stop to the top

It looks like Australian audiences still love to see Liam Neeson kick ass. Neeson’s latest action thriller, Non-Stop, flew straight to the top of the box office over the weekend with $1.87 million. The film has received decent reviews, and seems to be a solid choice for a fun night at the movies. Aussie horror sequel Wolf Creek 2 took in another impressive $1 million and looks likely to add handsomely to that number over the coming weeks. The Wolf of Wall Street continues to prove that it has seriously impressive legs, while Kevin Costner’s 3 Days to Kill failed to take any of the spotlight away from Neeson.

This week sees the release of the long-gestating sequel to 2006’s 300, the confusingly-titled 300: Rise of an Empire. The 3D film will appeal to fans of the original and any 15 year old boy looking for a violent, bloody time at the cinema. Its appeal beyond those two groups may be limited. Also being released is the teen-aimed Vampire Academy, and a limited Sing-Along re-release of Disney’s Frozen.

Non-Stop also took first place in the US over the past weekend with $30 million, while second place went to Christian film Son of God with $26.5 million. Son of God is a re-edited version of the mini-series The Bible from last year, using only the scenes involving Jesus to portray the story of his life. So it’s essentially a repackaging of material that those going to see the movie had likely already seen, but that didn’t stop them! The LEGO Movie came in third with $21 million and crossed the $200 million mark in domestic takings. Frozen – which won two Oscars today, including best Animated Feature – became the 18th film to cross the $1 billion mark over the weekend and is yet to open in Japan, where it is expected to do big business. The film is likely to finish inside the Top 10 highest grossing movies of all time. Wow!
