Australian Box Office Report: WWII epic Dunkirk tops box office this week

Director Christopher Nolan’s eagerly awaited WWII epic, Dunkirk, shot to the top of the box office charts in its debut week.  It earned $6.0m, and got rave reviews from our reviewer.  It’s currently screening across 292 theatres nationally, including six 70mm screens and 1 IMAX screen, where it grossed $234k and $180k, respectively.  Dunkirk takes over the top spot this week from Spider-Man: Homecoming

Meanwhile, buzz continues to generate for Baby Driver, this week remaining steady at 2nd spot.  It earned $2.44m, and in its second week in cinemas, has earned a little over $8.5m.

Due to Dunkirk‘s strong debut, last week’s no. 1 film, Spider-Man: Homecoming slid down to no. 3, but still earned $2.07m. In its third week in cinemas, it’s made $22.5m, and can be seen on 484 screens nationwide.

Similarly, last week’s no. 3 film, Despicable Me 3, dropped to no. 4 this week, and earned $947k in its 6th week at the box office.  To date, it has made $31.23m (Wonder Woman has made $30.78m to date).  It’s worth noting also that Wonder Woman , though not having earned as much to date as the minions, is still kicking around the top 10 list (from no. 5 to no. 7), and earned $385k.

Rounding out the top 5 this week is Cars 3.  Down from 4th spot last week to 5th spot this week, it earned $483k at the box office, and has made $12.62m to date.

Interestingly, the only other title in the top 10 that is new to the list (aside from Dunkirk) is Paris Can Wait (described as Before Sunset for baby boomers), starring Diane Lane.  It debuted at no. 6 and made $426k. Our reviewer was not impressed by it!

The next action blockbuster to hit cinemas is War for the Planet of the Apes, which should appear in the top 5 next week.
