Australian Box Office Report: Tom Cruise’s Jack Reacher knocks Emily Blunt off the train

If you think Tom Cruise’s ability to pull a box office coup was over, think again. Jack Reacher: Never Go Back has only entered its first week in theatres and it’s already gained the top spot, earning $2.61 million.  Whilst that’s great news for Cruise and his fans, it has, however, earned the the lowest screen average for the #1 movie this month.  Cruise’s most successful opening release in recent years has been Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, with $5.01 million.

Jack Reacher beat out former number one The Girl on the Train, which made just $1.88 million at the box office this week.  Now in its third week at the box office, the Emily Blunt thriller’s screen average has taken a bit of a nosedive, earning just $6,450.

There have been more significant movements on the box office ladder this week.  Last week’s 2nd position, Inferno, dropped to 4th place, earning $1.07 million, and last week’s number four, Deepwater Horizon, has dropped to number seven, and earning $483k.

The much anticipated films The Magnificent Seven and Bridget Jones’ Baby made $721k and $508k respectively, which comes as no surprise as they have both been in theatres for close to four weeks already – but they’re hanging in there all the same!

New to the Box Office this week is Keeping Up with the Joneses, earning $1.09 million.  The Isla Fisher and Zach Galifianakis film sits at number three on the ladder this week.  Another newbie to premiere in the past week was Ouija: Origin Of Evil.  At the number five spot, the horror film which our critic raved about earned $916k. Masterminds, which has only spend two weeks in theatres, has completely fallen off the charts.  Last week, it was at number six, and now it has not even made the top ten list.

Next week’s Box Office Report should include Marvel’s Doctor Strange which is expected and Chris Pine’s Hell or High Water.
