With the school holidays winding down this weekend, it seems audiences were more of the MA15+ variety, as The Girl On The Train took top spot with $4 million earned this weekend. Changing the setting from England to upstate New York, the film’s screen average was among the top 10 so far this year, the best result since Suicide Squad.
This meant that last week’s top film, Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children, came 2nd with $2.13 million. It made roughly 50% less than its $4 million opening weekend.
Deepwater Horizon came third with a strong debut at the box office, earning $1.72 million. This is probably due to the star cast, featuring Mark Wahlberg and Kurt Russell set during the 2010 Texan oil spill disaster.

School holiday fave The Secret Life Of Pets dropped from no. 2 to no. 4 this week, earning $1.52 million. It still snags the honour of being one of the strongest performers in the top 20 list, claiming $27.72 million to day. The Magnificent Seven also dropped from no. 3 to no. 5, earning $1.38 million.
The coming week sees the debut of Masterminds, a screwball action/comedy flick starring Kate McKinnon, Kristen Wiig, Zach Galifianakis and Owen Wilson.
