Australian Box Office Report: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Roars into No. 1 Spot Again

For the second week in a row,  Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them roared ahead to no. 1 on the box office ladder, earning $5.44 million this week.  Although this film was dropped from 86 screens nationally, it still manager to garner a screen average of $8,761 from 622 screens.

A surprise placing in not just the top 10, but top 5, was André Rieu: Christmas with André.  So surprising, in fact, it wasn’t even mentioned as a “one to watch” in last week’s report (sorry).  Coming it at no. 2 (context: last week’s no. 2 was Doctor Strange!), the Dutch violinist and conductor’s film was screened as part of a cinema event, and earned $1.08 million at the box office.  It made a screen average of $8,370 across 130 screens.

New to the box office this week was Michael Keaton’s The Founder, the story of the founder of the McDonalds franchise.  It knocked Amy Adam’s Arrival out of its no. 3 spot and earned $877k at the box office.

This therefore pushed the sci-fi flick down to no. 4, earning 33% less than last weekend and taking in $780k at the box office. Arrival‘s spot was taken last week by The Accountant. 

Thanks to André Rieu, Doctor Strange has dropped in its fifth week to no. 5 on the box office report, earning $727k, and dropping from 96 screens.

Whilst we were somewhat on the money last week about Fantastic Beasts staying at no. 1, and The Founder making its way to the top 10, we did think Bad Santa 2 was going to make more of a splash, but it didn’t – likely due to negative reviews and surprisingly limited buzz in the leadup.  It opened at no. 6 on the box office report, and earned $589k.

We should see the much anticipated animated film, Trolls, make the cut in next week’s box office report. It stars Anna Kendrick, Justin Timberlake, Zooey Deschanel as … trolls.
