Australian Box Office Report: Doctor Strange is the perfect medicine for moviegoers this week

No surprises that yet another superhero from the Marvel universe will do so well at the box office, with Doctor Strange topping the ladder, earning $6.42 million at the box office in its premiere week.

The Benedict Cumberbatch vehicle has performed so well, its earnings make up a little over half of what was made at the box office by the top 20 movies this weekend.

Girl On The Train remained steady at no. 2, taking in $1.26 million this week.  It’s been hanging around the top 3 for the past 4 weeks now, so expect to see this in at least the top 5 or 10 for the next fortnight or so.

It was Cumberbatch vs. Cruise this week for no. 1 spot though, and with the superhero winning that eternal battle, Tom Cruise’s Jack Reacher: Never Go Back slipped to no. 3, taking in $1.21 million at the box office.  It’s a bit of a sad story, having only been in cinemas for two weeks.

Movements in the top 5 were minor, spots 4, 5 and 6 went to last week’s 3, 4 and 5.  The comedy Keeping Up With The Joneses dropped from no. 3 to no. 4, ($580 thousand), Dan Brown’s film adaptation of Inferno dropped from no. 4 to no. 5 ($485 thousand) and Ouija: Origin of Evil dropped from no. 5 to no. 6 ($467 thousand).

Next week’s report might see the Jeff Bridges/Chris Pine western Hell Or High Water crawl up or remain in the top 10.  This week it debuted at no. 8, earning $351 thousand in the box office, and garnering pretty good reviews.

Other films to keep an eye out for this week include the Mel Gibson film Hacksaw Ridge (starring Andrew Garfield) and the tearjerker Light Between Oceans, the film where Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander play a married couple who rescue a baby adrift at sea and raise it as their own.  Morality questions ensue.
