Australian Box Office Report: American Made tops list, beats Annabelle to no. 1 position

After an impressive two weeks in the top spot, horror film Annabelle: Creation was ousted from its prime position by the new Tom Cruise action/comedy American Made.  The filmed debuted in cinemas by earning $2.13m in its opening weekend, while Annabelle: Creation pulled in a not-too-shabby $911k.

Our reviewer called this week’s no. 1 film a “a welcome return to form for Cruise”, and gave it a fairly good review.  It earned a screen average of $5,958 across 211 screens.

This doesn’t mean that Annabelle: Creation will drop of from the top 5 any time soon.  It’s made nearly $6m since its debut and will continue to intrigue audiences for a little while longer.

No movement in 3rd place this week, with Dunkirk holding steady and earning $664k in the process.  It’s been in cinemas for nearly 2 months now, and has made about $21.72m nationally. It continues to perform strongly at the IMAX theatre in Melbourne, too, where it has a special print running through early October.

Last week saw a strong debut for The Dark Tower, but it has since dropped to 4th place, earning  $587k this week.  It managed a screen average of $2,184 across 269 screens nationally.

There was no movement either for Hampstead, which again sits at no. 5 this week.  It made $500k this week, down 32% from last week’s earnings.

Logan Lucky saw a drop out of the top 5 this week.  At no. 4 last week (its debut), it’s now at no. 7, earning $351k.  Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is also falling down the ladder, as is gentle comedy The Big Sick, which is hanging in at no. 10 this week.

In terms of big screen drawcard results, Sunday’s Mayweather vs. McGregor fight sits securely at no. 6.  One day, they’ll make a film about it.

The Hitman’s Bodyguard, an action/comedy starring Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson, hits theatres this weekend and should make an appearance on the box office report next week.  It was given 3 out 5 stars by our reviewer.
