22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards: Spotlight takes top honours; Leonardo DiCaprio wins his first SAG

Over the weekend, the 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards took place, a night that celebrated on-screen diversity, a stark contrast to the backlash surrounding the upcoming “lily-white” Oscars.

Top honour award ‘Outstanding Performance by a Cast in Motion Picture’ went to Spotlight, beating out The Big Short, another front-runner at the Oscars.

With no surprise, Leonardo DiCaprio takes ‘Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a leading role’ for his role in The Revenant. Leonardo is a clear favourite to win at the Oscars this year.

The television awards celebrated the most diversity, starting with Idris Elba taking the award for outstanding male actor in Luther, his 2nd SAG award for the night after winning supporting actor for Beasts of No Nation. He joked, “Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to diverse television!”

Orange is the New Black wins best ensemble in a comedy series again. Uzo Abuda also takes outstanding female actor for the comedy series. Orange is the New Black star Laura Prepon motioned to the shows diversity, “Look at this stage; this is what we talk about when we talk about diversity.”
