This year’s annual Gold Coast Film Festival (running in its 14th year) will consist of 38 films from 15 different countries. The festival has also secured six Australian Premieres and seven Queensland Premieres from 31 March – 10 April.
The Festival will offer films that have been selected from Queensland and around the world, ranging from first time filmmakers to Academy Award nominees. With 80 screenings, events, seminars, and films, this year’s action-packed program has something for everyone.
It’s been confirmed that Sundance Film favourite Eddie the Eagle will be making its film premiere in Queensland at the Opening Night of the Gold Coast Film Festival on Thursday 31 March.
Inspired by true events, Eddie The Eagle includes a fabulous cast starring Taron Egerton, Hugh Jackman and Christopher Walken. The story follows British ski jumper Michael Edwards, better known as ‘Eddie the Eagle’ charming the world with his performance at the 1988 Winter Olympics. This feel-good movie will be sure to delight and inspire people of all ages.
Film highlights include:
- This year the festival will include YScreen. It is a program of entertaining and intelligent films and workshops for children and teens. It has been made to encourage young viewers to engage in critical film discussions in classrooms, providing insights to culture and the way of life.
- The annual Women in Film Luncheon will be presented by Screen Queensland and will return Australian actor, film producer, writer, editor and director Gracie Otto. She will be a guest speaker for the event, sharing her experiences and insights in her journey as a film professional. Otto’s feature documentary The Last Impressario was premiered at BFI London Film Festival. She has also set up an all-female production company called The Dollhouse Collective with Rose Byrne, Shannon Murphy, Krew Boylan and Jess Carrera.
- Director Stephen Page will be making his debut at the Gold Coast Film Festival with his film Spear, which will include a Q&A session. This will be his first feature, marking a pivotal event in Australia’s film history for being the world’s first contemporary Indigenous dance movie.
- Other special guests of the festival will include Australia’s most recognised actresses, Claudia Karvan. She was awarded the 2016 Chauvel Award. This award is in recognition of Charles Chauvel and her significant contributions to Australian cinema.
