The 2022 Furphy Literary Award opens for submissions

Pens/keyboards at the ready – the 2022 Furphy Literary Award has opened for submissions!

Named for Joseph Furphy, author of the 1903 Aussie classic, Such Is Life, and “furphies” – the yarns spun on the back of Furphy water carts during World War One – the award celebrates writing with a distinctly Australian focus.

Writers are invited to submit short stories of up to 5,000 words, within the topic of life in Australia in all its diversity, with the chance to walk away with a $15,000 prize, a residency at La Trobe university, and publication in the next Furphy Anthology. In addition, there are cash prizes for first and second place, and publication opportunities for further a selection of entries. Free to enter and open to writers at any stage of their career, it’s an exciting opportunity for budding and established authors alike!

This year’s judges include novelist Anson Cameron, writer and publisher John Harms, playwright and author Margaret Hickey, writer and publisher John Kerr, journalist and author Thornton McCamish, and a new judge this year in Miles Franklin Literary Award winner Tara June Winch.

Writers, you have until April 30th to submit your work! Head to the Furphy Story website HERE for more info and, if you’re looking for inspo, check out our review of the 2020 Furphy Anthology HERE!
