The Meatball & Wine Bar expands to Windsor (Melbourne)

Wildly popular Melbourne restaurant, The Meatball & Wine Bar, is adding another location to its impressive roster, this time opening up at 150 Chapel Street, Windsor. The recently opened expansion joins a family of venues in Flinders Lane, Richmond and Collingwood, all speaking to a love of good, hearty meatballs and even better wine.

When it first opened in Flinders Lane in Melbourne’s CBD in 2012, The Meatball & Wine Bar was the only restaurant in the country serving predominantly meatballs.  Owner Matteo Bruno, , originally a film and TV producer, was inspired to open the specific restaurant by his work on food programs, amongst them Ask the Butcherand 2 seasons of Stefano Manfredi’s Cooking Paradiso.

The new Windsor location, housed in a heritage-listed building, boasts designed by Techne Architects, , the team behind venues like Garden State and Biggie Smalls. The venue seats up to 60 people, and includes private dining booths, bar and outdoor seating.  Marble counter tops and luscious greenery add to the charm of the alluring building.

A few differences have been observed at the new spot as well. Specifically, there’s a larger selection of natural wines from Italy and Australia, and a return of the bar’s Italian-inspired cocktails. Food includes all the restaurant’s classics, like the Giant Pork & Veal Meatball with pan-fried gnocchi on creamy red sauce, with extra meatball options being added to the main menu. There will also be a rotating selection of meatball salads.

Bruno is keen to expand his meatball reign further than Victoria, with restaurants in the works in Sydney, his home town in Perth, Brisbane and Adelaide.  He’s also working on opening a butcher shop in Richmond early this year, with a sharp focus on Italian meats and house state-of-the-art dry aging facilities.
