Shangri-La Colombo opens in Sri Lanka this month on 10 acres of ocean-side land

Sri Lanka’s capital city, Colombo, will welcome a new luxury property this month with the opening of Shangri-La Hotel, Colombo, joining the high-end group’s Hambantota Golf Resort & Spa – which opened in 2016 – as one of the most prominent hotel launches in the country in nearly 30 years. Positioned along the ocean-side Galle Face Green promenade, the hotel will offer uninterrupted views of the vast Indian Ocean as well as 500 guestrooms and suites and 41 serviced apartments spread across 10 acres of land, which will soon accommodate an office tower, two residential buildings and a high-end shopping mall.

The hotel, which is a 40-minute drive from Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport, will have a theatrical entrance defined by a specially commissioned work from celebrates Chinese artist Man Fung-Yi, who has created a life-sized infant elephant metal structure for the lobby to highlight the hotel’s blend of modernity and nature.

Colombo will also be welcoming a new social and dining scene with the arrival of the hotel, which will have a total of six restaurants, bars and lounges offering a large array of local and international cuisine alongside live entertainment and luxury amenities including a 9-room spa, a 24-hour fitness centre, and a large swimming pool and bar overlooking Galle Face Green and the Indian Ocean.

Already confirmed as one of the dining destinations is a new iteration of the city’s famous native cuisine restaurant Kaema Sutra, founded by celebrity chef Dharshan Munidasa and Sri Lankan actress Jacqueline Fernandez. This is in addition to an authentic Chinese restaurant, a western grill, an interactive all-day dining restaurant, and a lobby lounge.

“As tourist arrivals into the island have grown exponentially over the last eight years, Colombo has found its place as the gateway to all this amazing island has to offer”, said Timothy Wright, the property’s Vice President and General Manager. “We aim to set new luxury hospitality standards in Colombo and seamlessly blend Shangri-La’s personalised hospitality with the much-loved traditional Sri-Lankan charm”.

And with new hotel openings come the expected introductory offer for those with the good sense to get in quick. This package, “Discover Colombo”, is being offered from AU$320 per room per night and includes either a Sunset Heritage City Walk or tuk tuk safari tour of the city’s street shopping gems, alongside daily breakfast, a dinner or two at the local specialty restaurant, 20% off food and beverages, and complimentary Wi-Fi.

Business clientele also have access to a special Business Travel package which is currently running from AU$267 per night, offering return airport transfer, daily breakfast, complimentary laundry and Wi-Fi. The package is valid for stays from 1st December 2017.
