On the Shelf: Stockade Brew Co.’s new range of brews

Relatively new craft brewery Stockade Brew Co. in South West Sydney stayed true to their promise of continual forward movement this year by introducing an entirely new line-up of beers earlier this year. Their commitment to using only high quality ingredients, no sugars for high speed fermentation, and no compromises on purity has, in previous years, seen them take out numerous awards for craft lagers and ales, and their new range looks to be carrying on that reputation. In this ‘On the Shelf’ we take a look at three of those new brews: The Duel Hoppy Lager, the Chop Shop Pale Ale, and The Sesh Golden Session Ale.

A bit about the brewery first. Stockade Brew Co. was started up by four Australian brothers, after one, who worked 10 years in a renowned German brewery, convinced the others to start this whole thing in 2013. From then on Stockade Brew Co. have been going from strength to strength, constantly introducing new brews into the market, all of which indicate how in-touch and adaptable they are.

Previous awards have included “World’s Best Imperial Stout”, “Australasia’s Best Lager” and runner up for “Australia’s Best Pale Ale and IPA” at the prestigious World Beer Awards.

First, the Duel Hoppy Lager is the more experimental of the three, taking a traditional lager and balancing with pilsner and vienna malt. Ella, Summer, and U.S Cascade hops are imbued into this, giving it a very subtle, floral aroma that maintains the spicy, citrus punch.

The Chop Shop Pale Ale is the heavy hitter of the range, punchy with a high hop, full malt foundation. Cascade, Columbus, Simcoe, and UK Fuggle hops are blended up to this, all very strong against the American Ale malt. The rich, sweet malt flavour is the most noticeable on the palate but then there’s subtle citrus fruits and caramel aromas which you may notice come in on the back palate.

The Sesh is put forth as as Stockade Brew Co.’s essential summer entry, crisp and refreshing with American Ale malt which brings a nutty and rich base to the Vic Secret, Citra, and Cascade hops. You’ll get some really nice spice from this before you get a slightly citrus mid palate to carries to the back palate and leaves the mouth feeling very clean and fresh. This would pair up with some fresh seafood or salad.
