On the Shelf: “Huxtabrew” by Huxtaburger

“It’s official. We did it. Our own beer. Introducing HUXTABREW!!!,” announced the Huxtaburger team via social media just a few weeks ago, heralding a big step for the loved Melbourne burger chain. The brand has long been a go-to for Melbourne burger fiends, and a sharper focus on their alcoholic offerings can only strengthen that status, with extra points for actually having the dedication to launch their very own bottled beer.

Huxtabrew is a craft Victorian lager created in collaboration with Woodend based Holgate Brewhouse, focused on offering diners something sessionable that is designed to pair up specifically with Huxtaburger’s recently refreshed menu. Bottled at 4.3% ABV, the brew is a pale golden beauty with Australian Ella hops, obvious from the strong fruity, floral nose. Three different malts are used – Australian Pale, Carapils, and Munich – to give the palate a bready character that’s cut by strong notes of lemon and grapefruit. They’ve kept the bitterness low here although you’d feel a bit in the back of the palate as the smooth brew finishes rather clean.

For an exclusive house lager these would pair up nicely with some of the more standard beef burgers and sides on the menu. It’s a nice option to have alongside the “Huxtabubbles” of sparkling, Clair’s Special Sauce (Pinot Gris), and Bill’s Backyard Red (Shiraz). Kicking up these drinks options has also led to happy hour at all Huxtaburger venues to be extended from 4pm to 7pm every weekday, with half price Huxtabrew, Huxtabubbles, and other wines available.

Diners can head to the Prahran, CBD and Hawthorn stores for bottled Huxtabrew, or Collingwood and Eastland to guzzle a pot of the beer on tap. For locations click HERE.
