Munich Brauhaus’ Oktoberfest 2015 – South Wharf (Melbourne)

Munich Brauhaus has long had a formidable reputation for bringing the best of Bavarian beer, food and culture to our tiny corner of the world. With Oktoberfest currently in full swing, revellers have gathered every night this month alraedy at the revered bier-haus to show off their dirndls and lederhosen with glee. Exploding with German creativity and world-class beer, this is one bustling occasion that is not to be missed.

The venue is decorated with festive streamers in the traditional Oktoberfest colours of cobalt blue and white. It features several bars as well as private dining areas and outdoor seating. Be prepared for the festive cheer of a live Oom Pah Pah band in the main dining room as you delight in a stellar stein. Interludes give way to a range of amusing games that will be sure to keep you on your toes.

Be warned though that you may get a bit wobbly having too much fun and not enough food, so be sure to soak up all that booze by feasting on a range of appetising Oktoberfest eats. There are three set menus on offer, each featuring a serving of Brezen’ – original Bavarian pretzels with cultured butter on the side.

Munich’s Tasting Platter is certainly a focal point, with all the tasty titbits that you might associate with Bavaria heaped onto one giant plate. Think succulent pork belly with crispy crackling and sweet apple compote, creamy mashed potatoes, tangy sauerkraut and red cabbage, as well as crispy onion rings bursting with savouriness.

The roast pork knuckle is tender and falls off the bone, while crunchy pieces of schnitzel will have you longing for more.

There’s nothing more German than wiener so be sure to gobble up your fair share of an assortment of these delicious smoked sausages, including the mouth-watering char-grilled bratwurst.

For dessert, treat yourself to a whole giant apple strudel, fresh out of the oven and served with vanilla anglaise. Alternatively, indulge in the Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte – a decadent chocolate black forest sponge cake decorated with luxuriously unadulterated marinated cherries.

For just $12 throughout October, you may participate in the Oktoberfest Bier Flight, which will see you receiving four exclusive 200mL samples of beer from the rich and flavoursome to smooth and easy to drink. If this isn’t enough, then you’ll be excited to know that Munich Brauhaus has released their first-ever Oktoberfest Bier Passport, a ticket that will allow you to try five authentic and limited edition beers direct from the Oktoberfest bier tents in Germany, with the sixth being a 500mL of your favourite “on the haus”. Meanwhile, if you live, work or play in the South Wharf area, then be sure to flash your 3006 post-code to the bartenders for a free upgrade from a 300mL to 500mL beer; a deal that is sure to knock the lederhosen off anybody local.

Every Monday to Thursday night, punters will have the opportunity to spin the Oktoberfest Wheel, with the chance to win special prizes not only for themselves but as well as for everyone else in the entire venue. Über goodies up for grabs include everything from $1 pretzels and free beer upgrades to Munich’s own Oktoberfest merchandise. However, the end of the week is where it’s really at, with the all-new Fräulein Fridays event promising complimentary schnapps on arrival and $10 Bavarian cocktail specials for ladies only between 5-8pm.

With good cheer, a collection of fun games, brilliant beers and all the sausage that you can devour, Munich Brauhaus is the perfect place to celebrate Oktoberfest this year.
