It now seems the opulence of smashing a smashed avo on toast has in part inspired an entire business, with Bondi Beach becoming home to a gourmet toast bar. That’s Mr Topper’s Toast Bar to you. These ones are actually affordable though, and Mr Topper is offering a menu that looks far beyond the standard toast toppings to include several savoury options, and a few for the sweet tooth.
Opened earlier this month, Mr Topper has taken the space at 222 Campbell Parade, facing the iconic beach with a commitment to simple, affordable and quality takeaway brunch options for those who want wholesome food on the go. It’s a straight forward concept, pushing healthy breakfast and lunch with a menu that offers two choices: the type of bread, and the type of topping.
Of course, smashed avo makes an appearance on the menu, topped on whatever toast you please with eggs and bacon. There’s even a fancier version called The Daily, with avo, charcoal dusted goats feta, mild chilli flakes and mixed sesame.
Other options include Homestyle, a topping of crispy bacon, muddled egg and sweet tomato chutney, Fancy Pants with smoked salmon, creme fraiche, cucumber and fresh dill, Fresh to Death with fresh tomato, ricotta, basil and a light balsamic glaze, and Top Lunch, poached chicken, aioli, walnut, celery and rocket. Vegetarians are well catered for with other options like My Mushroom, hummus, sauteed mixed mushroom, chilli and goats feta.
Those after something even simpler get a “pick your bread, choose your spread” menu with standards like peanut butter, jams, vegemite and honey, alongside others like caco super spread, almond, tahini, almond butter and more; each of those ones are priced at $6 each.
If you want some sweet toppings you’ve got choices like Strawberry, with fresh berries, clotted cream and honey, and the B1 with fresh banana, toasted muesli, drizzled honey and optional peanut butter.
New York-style cold drinks are available from the bar as well as traditional iced coffees, matcha drinks, sugar free sodas and a few others.
Bondi Beach’s Mr Topper’s Toast Bar is the first in what the owners are hoping will be the first of many venues, with plans to expand to Sydney CBD, Melbourne CBD, and even New York.
