Mosman’s Avenue Road Cafe pushes forward with fresh new look and menu (Sydney)

The team behind Mosman favourite Avenue Road Café have made the recent decision to re-focus their approach, resulting in both a new menu and a new look, switching up their breakfast and lunch offerings to include an array of dishes that focus on owner Taran Tamana’s heritage, reinterpreting café classics through a unique scope that draws inspiration mainly from across Asia and India.

Being included in Good Food’s Top 50 Sydney Cafes list has certainly bolstered Avenue’s already enviable reputation on the North Shore, and with this change the venue is dedicated on further satisfying their strong fan base with generous, quality dishes. Not to mention that golden Double Roasters coffee, of which their shelves are packed along with freshly made chutneys and other produce.

One step inside Avenue and you’d notice the significant changes. The theme now heavily focuses on art-deco, inspired by the building’s heritage past. Crisp white walls feature fresh greenery and overlook retro banquette seating while framed prints surround the space and benefit from a spectacular light installation featuring pastel vintage pendant lights. It’s a comfortable ambiance with which to enjoy early morning dishes like The Ave Benedict – crispy duck, poached eggs, cauliflower, dukkah, quinoa cous cous, and apple cider hollandaise on sourdough – and Palak Lamb Eggs, which is a slow cooked lamb shoulder with spiced cherry tomato sauce, feta, nuts, gremolata, and poached eggs on sourdough. Breakfast also brings the interesting Roast Pumpkin Bruschetta, which is served with poached eggs, halloumi, hummus, pine nuts, dukkah, and basil.

Lunch moves onto both simple servings like the Spiced Pumpkin Soup and Poached Chicken Sandwich along with more complex Asian fusion dishes like Spiced Prawn Masala Pappadum, which is a slow-cooked Tandoori lamb melt, and the Pakora Wrap, featuring a vegetable fritter and house-made sweet mango chutney. Burgers also feature on the menu – southern fried chicken, pulled pork, beef & bacon – and lighter options include the Squid and Apple Salad or Crispy-Skin Barramundi.

Milkshakes – Peanut Butter and Nutella flavours feature – and fresh Cold Pressed Juices feature alongside the coffee and carefully curated wine and beer lists.
