Over the weekend it was revealed that Delta Air Lines is set to become the third airline to service the Melbourne to Los Angeles route. Starting 3rd December 2025, the carrier will see Melbourne become its third non-stop destination in the country, following Sydney and Brisbane.
Melbourne will also be the fifth direct destination for Delta in the South Pacific region, with flights to Auckland and Papeete already in service.
This comes eight years after Virgin Australia – then in a codeshare alliance with Delta – introduced their Boeing 777’s into the route. Sadly, both its Trans-Pacific flights and its Delta partnership didn’t survive the pandemic, so this news will be a welcome one to Victorians. Delta will join United and Qantas in offering Victorians this direct flight.
As you’ll see from my recent review of their service, the Delta service is a fantastic one. And yes, unlike some of their competition, they offer spirits on their Trans-Pacific service. And some surprisingly good food, even in economy. Details about their recently refreshed in-flight dining experience can be found HERE.
The flights will be operated on their new fleet of Airbus A350-900s, with three weekly flights starting from LAX on 3rd December, and from MEL on 5th December.
The LAX flights will depart LAX at 9:25 pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. They will land in Melbourne two days later at 8:15am. Their Melbourne flights, meanwhile, will depart at 10:25 am on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. They’ll land at 6:10 am on the same day in Los Angeles.
The aircraft will have four classes to choose from: Delta One Suites, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort+ and Main Cabin.
Delta One customers experience increased privacy and the luxury of a fully reclining seat, accompanied by plush bedding crafted from recycled materials, artisan-made amenity kits, chef-curated meals and additional comforts. Meanwhile, Delta Premium Select passengers enjoy a wider seat with a deeper recline and an adjustable footrest and leg rest, an enhanced dining experience and various other amenities. The Premium Select product can be seen in the header image of this article.
While at LAX, select passengers will have access to the just opened Delta One Lounge at LAX. They’ve also enhanced the overall experience on ground as part of the $2.3 billion transformation of the airport, known as Sky Way at LAX.
From LAX, the airline offers over 150 departures to nearly 60 destinations. For travelers coming from Melbourne, Delta provides convenient connections to more than 40 cities across the U.S., including major hubs like New York (JFK), Boston (BOS), Seattle (SEA), and Atlanta (ATL).
