The stunning Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel is preparing a true gift for those planning to Cape Town in October and an elegant homage to Nelson Mandela, timed to celebrate the release of Dare Not Linger: The Presidential Years – the long-awaited second volume of Mandela’s memoirs. This is channeled in their recently announced “Memories of Mandela” package, which includes two nights at the sprawling property, a copy of Dare Not Linger, and a three-course meal inspired by the beloved former President of South Africa and his favourite dishes.
Dare Not Linger: The Presidential Years, is an important and no doubt stirring sequel to Mendela’s iconic Long Walk to Freedom, put together by South African writer Mandla Langa who used detailed notes left by Mandela as well as previously unseen archival material. It will be the focal point of the property’s two-night package with additional offerings during the stay, including an opportunity to spend time with Christo Brand, one of the guards responsible for looking after Mandela when he was incarcerated on Robben Island, and guests having their portrait painted by the property’s resident artist Cyril Coetzee, who was Mandela’s portraitist.
During their stay guests will also be able to book a two-hour story-telling walk with a “Footsteps to Freedom” guide, which includes visits to sites that have been integral to the life of Nelson Mandela, from Tuynhuis and St George’s Cathedral to Parliament and the City Hall.
While the aforementioned are add-ons to the package, the three-course dinner is included and will feature a showcase of Mandela’s go-to dishes including oxtail soup and Farida Omar’s chicken curry with samosas and roti. It’ll be served in the property’s Planet Restaurant, adjacent to the room where Mandela himself used to eat.
The luxury hotel’s package is available from 19th October 2017 to 19th October 2018, priced at R11,800 (approx AUD $1,116 for two nights, two people sharing, including breakfast as well as the special three course dinner and a copy of Dare Not Linger).
