The Dreame H16 Pro Steam knows how to drop it low

Robot Vacuum manufacturers are trying to make things jump (and mop without slushing dirt around). Phone manufacturers are constantly tweaking their cameras and trying to make life (even) easier for content creators. The ones building wet and dry vacuums?

What keeps them up at night is profile.

How can they produce a vacuum cleaner that can completely transform its profile from a vertical stick to a perfectly flat device that can fit under every piece of furniture in the household? It’s a constant job of refinement in this category, and Chinese tech giant Dreame has been leaping far ahead of its competitors in this regard.

The H16 Pro Steam ($999) is one of its most successful designs to date. Which is saying quite a lot. Along with brands like Ninja and Evovacs, Dreame has emerged as one of the fastest-growing producers of everything-tech in the world, and that’s not by accident.

Previous products I’ve tested from Dreame have all delivered that desire for feature-rich, premium design without toppling the value proposition. That’s not an easy feat, so it’s clear this team knows exactly what it’s doing. The H16 Pro Steam is just further proof to me, easily pitched as one of the most wet and dry vacuums on the market; easily the most flexible.

Design

The first thing you notice isn’t the steam cleaning or the powerful suction. It’s how much engineering has gone into making the H16 Pro Steam fit into places most upright cleaners simply can’t.

The body folds completely flat, allowing the cleaning head to slide underneath lounges, beds and low entertainment units without forcing you into awkward positions. My apartment has two levels with a mix of carpet and hard flooring, along with a couple of particularly low lounges that normally collect a depressing amount of dust. The H16 Pro Steam reached underneath all of them without any furniture shuffling.

Despite weighing 6.8kg, it rarely feels cumbersome during use thanks to the powered wheels, which help pull the vacuum forwards rather than making you wrestle it around the house. It almost glides across hard flooring, taking much of the effort out of larger cleaning sessions. The weight is really only noticeable when carrying it between floors.

Build quality is excellent throughout. Everything feels solid without becoming overbuilt, while the controls remain refreshingly straightforward. The LED display is clear, the voice prompts are genuinely useful instead of annoying, and switching between cleaning modes becomes second nature after a few uses.

The dock deserves some credit as well. Like many premium wet and dry vacuums, the H16 Pro Steam automatically washes and dries its roller after each clean, using high-temperature water and hot air to reduce odours and minimise maintenance. It turns what used to be one of the biggest drawbacks of this category into something you barely think about.

Performance

This is where the H16 Pro Steam justifies its premium positioning.

Dreame quotes 28,000Pa of suction, but numbers rarely tell the full story. What stood out during testing was how little effort it took to clean everyday messes. Dust, crumbs, tracked-in dirt and pet hair disappeared in a single pass across hard flooring, while the roller left noticeably less moisture behind than older wet and dry vacuums I’ve used.

Steam mode is the headline feature, and it’s particularly useful in kitchens and bathrooms where dried spills and sticky residue tend to accumulate. Instead of relying solely on cleaning solution, the H16 Pro Steam uses high-temperature steam alongside hot water washing to loosen stubborn grime before vacuuming everything away. It feels like a genuinely useful addition rather than another feature added for the marketing department.

The smart cleaning mode was the one I used most often. Dirt detection automatically adjusts suction and water flow depending on what the vacuum encounters, meaning you can walk around the apartment without constantly changing settings. It’s the sort of automation that quietly makes cleaning less tedious.

Although it’s primarily designed for hard floors, moving between carpeted areas and timber flooring throughout my apartment never felt awkward. The transition was seamless, making it practical for homes that mix different flooring types rather than forcing you to swap machines halfway through a clean.

Battery life proved more than adequate for my space. I never found myself rushing to finish before needing a recharge, and unless you’re cleaning a particularly large home, the runtime should comfortably cover an entire session.

Maintenance is similarly painless. Dirty and clean water remain completely separate, emptying the tanks takes seconds, and the self-cleaning dock handles almost everything else. It’s one of those products that actually encourages you to use it more often because the clean-up afterwards is so minimal.

Verdict

Wet and dry vacuums have matured quickly over the past few years, but the H16 Pro Steam feels like another meaningful step forward rather than another yearly refresh. Plus, the price of these things typically drops quite fast. You can currently pick one up for $999. The product outweighs the price tag here.

The ability to lie completely flat genuinely changes how you clean around furniture, while the combination of strong suction, effective steam cleaning and thoughtful self-maintenance makes it one of the easiest premium floor cleaners to live with day-to-day.

FIVE STARS (OUT OF FIVE)

Highlights: Lowest of the low profiles; very efficient on mixed flooring; easy to maintain
Lowlights: Overpriced when not on sale (luckily vacuum cleaners are frequently on sale)
Price: $999
