DJI look to modular design with the fascinating new DJI Action 2

DJI has gone from strength to strength this year, from releasing their very first FPV drone to refining their popular Osmo series with the OM 5 gimble. As we head into 2022, it seems the company has now turned their attention to their action camera series, pushing the category forward with the new DJI Action 2.

With an interchangeable and adaptive magnetic design, the DJI Action 2 rethinks the classic action camera and opts for a smaller, more flexible profile with some powerful software so content creators can capture new angles with crystal-clear 4K.

“We stripped our action camera down to its fundamentals and rebuilt it from the ground up to create DJI Action 2,” said Paul Paul, DJI Senior Product Line Manager. “You can configure this camera for neighbourhood walks, hang gliding off a cliff, music festivals, and countless other action-packed moments.”

Modular design defines the fascinating new camera, which now weighs just 56g and is square-shaped compared to what you’d usually expect from competitors like the GoPro. This new design allows for multiple configurations and mounting combinations, giving content creators far more options when it comes to choosing their own perspective to share with the world.

You’ve got a 1/1.7-inch sensor capable of up to 4K, 120fps for the camera, boosted by a super-wide 155* FOV and a newly implemented Colour Temperature Sensor for better performance in complex lighting situations and underwater. DJI also includes the proprietary Electronic Image Stabilization technology with RockSteady 2.0 and HorizonSteady.

In terms of battery life, DJI promises a run time of up to 70 minutes on its own, 160 minutes when connected with the Front Touchscreen Module, and 180 minutes with the power module.

It seems DJI have tightened focus on magnetic attachments, and now have a plethora of ways to mount the action camera like the DJI Action 2 Magnetic Lanyard and the DJI Action 2 Magnetic Ball-Joint Adapter Mount. This should make capturing content incredibly interesting for content creators demanding a bit more out of their action camera, and looking to offer something unique to their platforms.

We’ll go into more detail when we go hands-on with the DJI Action 2, but for now note that you can pick up the new camera with various accessories included. The DJI Action 2 Dual-Screen Combo retails for $799 and includes the DJI Action 2 Camera, Front Touchscreen Module, Magnetic Lanyard, Magnetic Ball-Joint Adapter Mount, and Magnetic Adapter Mount.
