Troye Sivan on music, marriage equality and being a role model

Troye Sivan‘s recent win at the ARIA awards doesn’t mean he hasn’t remained the humble artist that he has always been. He had a lot to share in a recent interview at the ARIAs about his music, his thoughts of the marriage equality plebiscite in Australia and his thoughts of being a role model to young musicians in the industry.

Troye explained how he writes a lot of his music from a comfortable place. “We wrote a lot of this album in apartments and hotel rooms,” he said. “I like going into the studio, but I need to be comfortable and feel like I’m hanging out with friends when I’m writing music. A lot of the time, I do my best work at home chilling in my PJ’s.”

He went on to share his thoughts and how he wishes to contribute to pushing equal marriage in Australia. “To me, this is an issue that it feels like it’s no longer an issue of the people and more just an issue of the politicians. I think it’s only a matter of time, but we can’t get complacent and we have to keep going and keep pushing forward and all just do what we can. Socially, it feels like Australia is such an open, progressive inclusive, safe, country and I’m so proud to be from here and it sucks that it doesn’t feel like it’s represented politically.”

“I am waiting now and I’m going to keep doing my part to keep pushing the envelope as far as the opinion of the public goes. I’m going to try and keep doing that.”

When asked about his time in the spotlight pushing him to be a role model for the younger generation of Australian musicians, Troye stated that, “It freaks me out sometimes, it’s lot of pressure. It’s role that would be irresponsible of me to not do my best to embrace it as much as I can. I’ve been so blessed to have such an amazing platform to talk to a lot of people. I’m going to use every single second I can to talk about the things that I think are really important and to fight for causes I think are really important. It’s a pressure I’m totally fine to deal with.”
