I recently wrote that there were some record labels that were invariably on the money. Here’s another example: Colemine Records. Based out of Loveland, Ohio this independent label consistently pumps out high quality 45’s and LP’s from the best Soul and Funk bands you’ve maybe never heard of (but you should have). One of my favourite bands on their roster, The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble, dropped their new single “Aragon” at the tail end of last week, and it sure as hell does not disappoint.
The band, based in San Diego, specialise in heavy, original, instrumental soul and funk. Their 2015 self-titled debut won the San Diego Music Award, and featured in many of the end of year “Best of 2015” lists. They’ve shared the stage with the likes of Lee Fields and the Expressions, Kamasi Washington and Monophonics. Whilst the group have become renowned for their original material, with “Aragon” they’ve turned their hands at covering a track by one of the Funk and Soul greats – Roy Ayers.
Taken from their forthcoming third full length release, “Aragon” brings the good vibes from start to finish. With heavy percussion, a great beat and some wonderful horn work, the band pay a respectful nod to the Ayers original, whilst also bringing something fresh, and truly funky, to the table. If this doesn’t put you in the greatest mood for the rest of the week then nothing will!
