Track of the Day: Straight Arrows “21st Century” (2018)

Sydney-sider garage quartet Straight Arrows have released their long awaited third album this week. From the 26th of September on we can listen to another fuzzed out psychedelic punk compilation of eleven noisy tracks on ON TOP!

The band’s first two albums, It’s Happening and Rising, have already cemented their name into the Aussie garage rock hall of fame and gathered a national as well as an international fan cult. ON TOP! was, like the previous releases created completely on the Straight Arrows own terms, produced and recorded by front man Owen Penglis. After making music and touring since 2010 the musicians seem to have found a direct and purified sound on their third album, yet without loosing their beloved authenticity and ramshackle charm. Penglis points out the evolutions of the bands sound is more something that happened by change than by conscious efforts.

“As a group of gifted amateurs it sometimes happens that through repetition and long tours we’ve improved at our craft, despite our best efforts to the contrary,”

Straight Arrows have uploaded the official video for the single “21st Century” on YouTube, which is just as punky as the break-beat-grove track itself. Filmed at the backend of one of Sydney’s garbage disposal unit and directed by SPOD, the four band members are jumping up and down in military green jumpsuits shouting their provocative lyrics about wanting to “die in the 21st century”. With the sound of two guitars slathered in reverb and Penglis voice sounding like teenage rebellion, the single is everything but trashy and our track of the day.
