Track of the Day: Ribs “Bad Coffee” (2018)

Ribs is the immersive, heartfelt musical project of award-winning Perth artist Georgina Cramond. “Bad Coffee” is her highly anticipated debut single which was officially launched with a gig at The Bird last night.

2018 has been a huge year for Ribs, winning Best Newcomer at the Performing Arts WA Awards, for her solo music and storytelling show Interrupting a Crisis, a self-written production centered around her songwriting which helped her learn to manage clinical anxiety.

There was something about her storytelling that always touched me. The honestly and vulnerability feels like a friend telling me about their day.

In “Bad Coffee”, Ribs expresses her thought and worries while getting her daily small flat white. Something as mundane as buying coffee turns into a haunting yet calming melody.

“Bad Coffee” steps away from Ribs’ signature piano based sound, with Matthew Evans on guitar, but maintains her relatable and moving songwriting. A song that began on a day when nothing seemed possible, “Bad Coffee” finds hope in simple human experiences. Ribs shows us, in the first slice of a new collection of work, that music that isn’t about forgetting life’s troubles, but overcoming them.

What began as a solo project of intimate, stripped-back bedroom music and outlet of anxious feelings, grew into a stunning exploration of vulnerability and strength through poetic lyricism and emotionally charged accompaniment.
