Betty Who? Is a question not many will ask after the highly successful run this pop starlet is currently having. The Sydney-born singer-songwriter scored a Top Ten spot on the Australian Charts with her best-known single “I Love You Always Forever” and has been touring extensively throughout the year.
Since then Betty Who, a now LA-based musician, has gained considerable critical acclaim from publications such as Rolling Stone and Vogue, not to mention from her international fan base. Her particular brand of synth-pop has echoed off the walls of many clubs around the world and garnered her large amounts of Spotify listeners. Whilst, she might not have dropped an album, 2018 has been a busy year for Who, she released “All Things”, the theme from the popular Queer Eye reboot, and found herself starring in the official music video for Cher‘s cover of ABBA‘s “S.O.S.”.
“Between You & Me”, is her first single released as an independent artist and is the first taste from a full-length album, entitled Betty, that will follow in the early 2019. Without the pressure of having a record company at the back, she found freedom and space to work on projects close to her heart. So the album will be a collection of unique and honest songs.
The single is packed with heartfelt lyrics, wondering if there is more than friendship between her and a friend: “Just between you and me / I can feel something here / Wondering if you do too”. Accompanied by a minimalistic instrumentation the track is less the electro house anthem that we are used to, but rather a catchy acoustic tune that breaks into indie pop territory. The mellow guitar play and a quiet synth-textured beat, lay the emotional weight of this stripped-back single entirely onto Betty’s smooth vocals. And she sure delivers. “Between You & Me” already feels like a throwback single, to one’s teenage years, even though it was just released this week. The artist herself said, “When I listen to it, I imagine that 15-year-old me would love this song”, which describes this emotional indie pop single perfectly.
“Between You & Me” is available now. Betty will be released on February 15th. Early next year Betty Who will be embarking on a massive North American tour opening for Panic!
