The Road to SXSW 2018: Pretty City

Bringing their sounds back to SXSW for the second time this year, Melbourne’s Pretty City are set to return to Texas with a brand new show, as well as an inkling of what’s to come for the group.

As their sophomore album, Cancel the Future, edges closer to release, the band gives us a little insight into how they’re anticipating their American return.

“It’s a wild ride, that’s for sure…”

How many times have you play and how are you anticipating it this year?

This will be our second time at SXSW. We’re expecting tunes, beers, meetings and repeat until we all can’t walk, talk or eat BBQ any more.

How crucial do you think the opportunity to perform at and attend an event like this is for an Australian artist?

It’s really critical. The world is a lot smaller than it used to be and there’s no reason not to treat music as an internationally language and speak to as many people as possible.

What are you hoping to get out of the experience this year?

We’re really keen to catch up with our friends we made last time and reconnect with them. We’re also just looking to build on some really great support we’ve had on college and community radio.

What’s the most important element of SXSW for your band to experience or learn from?

I think it’s actually to learn from Americans and get out there and do your thing and be proud of it. We really suffer the tall poppy syndrome in Australia and are very self-deprecating. Americans are so much more able to talk positively about what they’re up to, and I think that’s the great thing about SXSW is refining that ability to talk about your craft positively. And drink beer and watch the best bands in a tight, crazy place.

Are you performing elsewhere around the US?

Nope. Just our official SXSW showcase. But we’re heading to Europe again in April/May.

Which other artists are you looking forward to catching?

I’m really looking forward to seeing Girl Skin from Brooklyn.

What kind of show could you guarantee an American crowd coming to your set for the first time?

Fun, energetic, melodic, heaps of hair, lots of bad drums faces and a whole lot of sweat.

SXSW takes place from March 9th – 18th this year. Check out Pretty City’s official showcase details here.
