We recently caught up with Ingrid Michaelson, in anticipation of her upcoming tour to Australia and in celebration of her recently released album Human Again. Well, by that I mean we sent her an e-mail with some questions, and here is what she replied with. I believe her caps lock key was broken.
Are you looking forward to returning and is there anything you didn’t get to do last time that you hope to do this time? (it was a pretty quick trip from memory!)
WE HAVE A DAY OFF IN SYDNEY AND I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THE INSIDE OF THE OPERA HOUSE.
You’re an artist who seems to have a truly devoted, passionate group of fans in Australia. What does that mean to you?
IT MEANS EVERYTHING! I DIDN’T REALIZE THAT. I HAVE ONLY TOURED THERE ONCE SO IT IS HARD TO GAUGE. IT IS SO HEART WARMING TO KNOW THAT PEOPLE SO FAR AWAY ARE CONNECTED TO ME.
You’re promoting your latest album Human Again on the tour. I imagine we’ll get a good taste of this? What can fans expect from the shows?
I AM COMING WITH MY TWO FEMALE BAND MATES. WE WILL BE DOING A LOT OF SONGS FROM THE NEW RECORD BUT ALSO A GOOD SAMPLING OF “OLDIES.”
There seemed to be quite a long gestation period for the album. How many songs did you end up writing in that period?
SOMEWHERE AROUND 25! I JUST KEPT GOING! I WROTE THE ALBUM BETWEEN JAN AND AUG OF LAST YEAR WITH THE EXCEPTION OF ONE SONG. I WAS ON A ROLL SO I JUST KEPT WRITING. IT COMES AND GOES IN WAVES.
How did you end up choosing what made the cut?
BETWEEN MYSELF, MY PRODUCER, DAVID KAHNE, AND A FEW OTHER PEOPLE I TRUST, WE ALL FIGURED IT OUT.
Who did you work with on the record?
DAVID KAHNE PRODUCED IT.
What do you find to be the best sort of “sync deal” for your music? Eg where are you most pleased to hear your music?
MY FAVORITE SYNC EVER WAS WHEN GOOGLE CHROME USED AN INSTRUMENTAL OF MY SONG “SORT OF” UNDER THEIR COMMERCIAL. IT WAS JUST A BEAUTIFUL SPOT, WELL PRODUCED. POIGNANT AND MEANINGFUL. IT MADE ME CRY.
Where would you hope your music never ends up?
IT WILL NEVER END UP ANYWHERE THAT I DON’T WANT IT TOO.
You performed as part of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. It really seems to me that you’re continually getting to do things that would be living out the fantasies of anyone. What do you have left to do on that bucket list?
OPENING A BAKERY! AND OWNING 5 DOGS. 🙂
I can’t imagine you ever stop writing – are you working on anything at the moment?
I AM ALWAYS COMING UP WITH LITTLE IDEAS HERE AND THERE BUT WHILE I AM ON THE ROAD IT IS DIFFICULT TO HAMMER THEM OUT. ONCE I AM HOME FOR A FEW MONTHS IN A ROW, I THINK MY NEXT RECORD WILL GET WRITTEN.
