the AU interview at Edmonton Folk Music Festival: The Once (Canada) talk festivals and touring through small towns

Folk trio The Once had a chat with the AU’s Editor-in-Chief, Larry at Edmonton Folk Music Festival in their homeland, Canada. The festival scene in Canada is one hugely centred around collaboration. Geraldine reflects on their collaborations, saying “90% of the time its really good other times its like ‘oh wow that didn’t go well at all!'”. Compared to the more structured sets on American stages, Andrew agrees; “in the States it’s a workshop stage, but up here the workshop just seems to be throw different artists together, it’s the jamming element”.

Their last set ended with a brand new song, raising the question, what’s next? Geraldine is quick to answer, stating; “What’s coming next is interesting, everything seems to be very different… We’re having so much fun with what we’re doing, we’re kids of the 80s, we’re going to be influenced”. After the success of their 4th album Departures, the new album may be moving away from their more traditional roots.

After touring with Passenger for seven months, the band are planning their own tour. Having started in Perth earlier this year, a return to Australia may be in the works, as Geraldine says; “Well this is it, people want a new record, we got to get down to those places again”. Organising a few small shows back home in Newfoundland is a definite priority. With all three coming from small island communities, Phil believes it’s important to tour to such places; “it’s incredibly important to us to travel around to the smaller communities, that’s who we are, that’s where we come from. We’re not going to turn our back on them” .
