the AU interview at Edmonton Folk Music Festival: John Smith (UK) on his artistic freedom and plans for new material

Independent artist John Smith had a chat with the AU’s Editor-in-Chief, Larry at the uniquely Canadian Edmonton Folk Music Festival. Reflecting on his time so far and discussing plans to record new songs, click through to hear what Smith had to say…

Smith is one artist out of many that has high regard for this festival; “It’s in Canada so naturally everyone’s very friendly”. The fusion of folk and acoustic music has given him the chance to collaborate with musicians and to create new music. His status as an independent artist gives him the freedom to record when he wants, saying “I’ve been on the road for 2 and a half years, you make notes as you go. I’m not beholden to anyone so if I want to make a record somewhere I juts go and do it.”

After the success of his album Great Lakes, Smith plans to continue touring at British folk festivals and then focusing on putting together new material; “I’m looking forward to getting home at the end of the year and putting together new songs… maybe it will take another 5 years, maybe it will take 3 weeks”.
