Brisbane/Meanjin emos Talk Heavy are having quite the week. First, they announced their signing with new Aussie label Ninth Life Records. And yesterday they dropped a brand new single – melancholic punk anthem “Die 4 U“.
Forming in 2022, Talk Heavy consists of Matt Cochran (vocals/guitar), Patrick Shipp (guitar), Tayla Ellerby (bass) and Beej Vaughn (drums). Their pop punk-esque sound has drawn comparisons to the likes of +44, PUP, and Motion City Soundtrack, with previous singles “The Song That Plays (When Marissa Dies)” and “The World Moved On Without Me” earning national airplay on Triple J and Triple J Unearthed.
New track “Die 4 U” was written about a falling out due a miscommunication, with the band saying:
“It’s about realising you’ve put so much effort into someone who isn’t giving the same effort back, hitting what feels like a point of no return, and finally accepting they might not care as much as you do,”
“Die 4 U” offers more of that raw, introspective lyricism we’ve come to know Talk Heavy for, but excudes a strong sense of natural progression for the band – appropriate given the exciting new chapter they’re about to embark on. As with past releases, Cochran has self-produced and mixed the track, teaming up with Will Yip (Movements, Scowl, L.S. Dunes) once again for mastering duties.
Talk Heavy are the first signing for emerging label Ninth Life Records, co-founded by Talk Heavy’s own Ellerby and Greyscale Records‘ Joshua Merriel. With the motto “nine lives, all of the sad“, Ninth Life is aiming to establish itself as THE place for emo, punk, rock and grunge – and it’s safe to say they’ve nailed the vibe with Talk Heavy and “Die 4 U”.
“Die 4 U” is out now – find it on your favourite streaming platform HERE. A single release show is set for May 30th at Brisbane’s Black Bear Lodge – you can grab tickets HERE.
