SXSW Music Interview: Spookyland (Sydney) chat at the Aussie BBQ about their upcoming tour dates, new live show & more!

Spookyland are one of those bands who I always seem to see pop up and impress overseas moreover than I do at home. Of course, being situated in SA as opposed to the usual east coast haunts Sydney bands would normally play, the opportunities to see Spookyland perform in Australia for me have been limited from the onset but each time I’ve been lucky enough to catch a live set, I’ve always been taken aback by the level of musicality these guys harness and improve upon each time.

Catching up with the band at the Aussie BBQ at SXSW, I find out a little more about what they’ve been up to since the last time I saw them, their upcoming tour with Gang Of Youths this month and how their live shows have been developing since they released their album and have been gaining traction overseas.

“The studio gets other muscles going,” drummer Nath Mansfield says. “You bring little parts into either, into your live sets and into the studio. [In] Your studio technique, I suppose, you’re working different parts of your musicality into your live show. It teaches you a different discipline and I think we’ve all come out of that listening to each other a bit more. Growing as a band, not fleshing out our instruments like, ‘Listen to me!’ it’s like, ‘Let’s be a collective a bit more’. It’s been good.”
