SXSW Music Interview: Hockey Dad (Wollongong) on tackling showcase festivals & developing as a live band abroad!

At the Sounds Australia Aussie BBQ at SXSW this year, Larry sat down with Zach and Billy of Hockey Dad notoriety to find out how the Texan festival had been treating the lads from Wollongong!

Playing multiple shows crammed into a short period of time, SXSW proved to be yet another learning experience in developing their craft as a live act abroad, having already been dropped into similar environments recently, most notably CMJ in New York.

“I didn’t notice it,” Zach says of the momentum beginning to generate around Hockey Dad in the States. “Apparently it was happening. All the label guys were trying to hit it up, but I didn’t notice that much difference! It good, people coming out to see us; hopefully it’s because we’re alright! Texas is awesome.”

“We were playing and I couldn’t believe how tight we were after playing six shows in a day or two days,” he says about SXSW. “It becomes natural, ‘We’ve got to play a show…’ It’s mechanic, it’s like your body just knows what to do after a while. It makes it better for everyone because we’re heaps tighter.”
