What music or artists inspired you?
We’re all great musical devourers, so being specific is quite difficult. We’ve never really spoken about what we do (and for that matter, never soundchecked or rehearsed!). Even though our musical histories are very different and our obsessions change all the time, in THIS group we’re collectively influenced by long-form instrumental music of an experimental nature. There are certain core composers and artists, which include the Velvet Underground, Suicide, Eliane Radigue, Silver Apples, Nico, Tony Allen, Keiji Haino, Grimes, the Boredoms, Stockhausen, Beethoven, Scriabin and many many others. Often you’d never pick particular things from listening to our records, but there is a vast wealth of listening and music-making over decades that informs our sense of direction and understanding of what is important about the music we connect with.

How did the band get started?
The band, lineup and name were all Ollie’s ideas, probably about 4 years ago! For various reasons, things didn’t get going until 2014, when Mat and Ollie started playing together as Taipan Tiger Girls. Lisa had been living overseas and then interstate, but when she moved back to Melbourne the band immediately became a trio, finalised the recordings for the album and began playing live shows. So the band has existed in its current form for a year.

How would you best describe your live show:
Long, hypnotic, immersive, loud. No bars, no melodies; no songs, no words.

What shows do you have coming up?
The Lyrebird Bar in Ripponlea on Friday 27 November.
Keep an eye on Facebook for more dates.

Tell us about your latest release:
Our latest release, 1 is our first release. It was recorded at Phaedra Studios with John Lee over two afternoons and mixed over another two. It’s a live recording and completely improvised. We released a limited issue of LPs via the wonderful It Records in July and it sold out in the first week. The album is full of dense drones, dreamy soundscapes, polyrhythmic patterns, spiraling feedback and echoes of the cosmic microwave background. It’s loud! We love it. There are still CDs and downloads available via It Records. We did some recording a few weeks ago for a new album that will hopefully come out in early 2016.
