Single Stream: Amanda Palmer and the Grand Theft Orchestra – “Do It With A Rockstar” (2012)

If there’s one thing Amanda Fucking Palmer can do, it’s create unique music. On her latest single, “Do It With A Rockstar”, Her Eccentric Excellency has perfectly merged sly humour with her typical raw passion, creating a song that sounds like nothing you expected, and everything you ever wanted.

Opening with a warrior’s wail of ‘Now I lay me down to sleep’, she then drops the bottom out from under you, and with only the occasional slam of drums as accompaniment, asks if you want to dance, fight, get drunk, and stay over with her. Which pretty much sums up the song itself. It jumps between a danceable chorus, a wicked wail to join in on, erratically suggestive verses, and the closing mantra of ‘I’ll be fine in a minute’ — all without the disjointed feeling that any other artist would struggle to avoid.

Lyrically, Amanda doesn’t give us a realistic choice. We can either return home to an evening of aimlessly checking our phone, hanging with our pets, and watching bad porn, or having the chance to ‘make out and then talk and then make out some more’ with her. Isn’t it obvious? But there’s an undercurrent of something less playful here, with the line ‘all the practice in the world / won’t get me good at loneliness’.

Perhaps her offer is less about saving us from the boredom of an empty house than we thought, and more about saving herself. Have a listen to it below and let us know what you think.
