Perth-based alternative rocker RinRin has just dropped new EP Angels, a six track strong celebration of her signature fusion style of hyper-pop punk and metal.
The musical project of singer-songwriter and guitarist Qarin Hipe, RinRin pulls influences from the likes of BABYMETAL, Poppy, and Bring Me The Horizon.
Angels is a prequel of sorts, gathering recent releases together ahead of a debut album due later this year. The tracks delve into a fantasy-fuelled dystopian narrative, where a multiverse of RinRins reside in alternate realities. Each has a different and distinct life, with a story to tell that’s inspired by RinRin’s real life experiences. Angels is an introduction to that lore, with a trademark vulnerability set against big beats and bigger breakdowns.
Opener “Angels” is a contemplative cry for help, a desperate attempt to hide your demons from the rest of the world. Then comes the deliciously unbridled aggression of “ChainsawGirl”, backed up by the almost Scene Queen-esque stylings of “FCKNRUN”.
“i’m sad lol” feels like the very best type of sad pop punk, while “Recession Pop” does exactly what it says on the tin, with a dreamy pop sound at perfect odds with its vulnerable lyrics. If Peaches PRC did metal, she might sound a little something like this.
It’s all wrapped up with a vicious little bow in the form of “PRN”, one of the EP’s heaviest tracks. We covered its release last year HERE.
The end result is an exciting little package, showcasing exactly what we’ve come to know and love the rising alternative star for. If the goal is to get us pumped for RinRin’s upcoming debut album, then Angels has absolutely succeeded. Consider us HYPED.
